The Newly Fallen (2020-2023)

Watercolors on paper, mounted to wood panel.

In Maine, late spring of 2020 at the height of the Covid 19 pandemic, it seemed like more than the usual number of trees had been uprooted by storms. Mourning the loss of these trees became conflated with the mourning of so many elders, mentors and heroes in a time of pandemic. At the same time, I found myself marveling at the new life springing from the trees that had fallen in seasons past. These drawings of exposed root systems are a memorial to those people who, now fallen, will continue to live on as sources of inspiration well beyond these seasons of loss.
