BRIGHT CANYON (2014)

Animations on 64 Screens
Presented by Times Square Arts for Midnight Moment in Times Square, New York, NY

Referencing the history of Times Square, Bright Canyon re-imagines this iconic space in Manhattan as a gorge. Once a confluence of streams, its walls and screens are transformed into a canyon landscape, populated by a series of exuberant local animals. The cliffs are based on photos, drawings and videos taken in the Palisades along the Hudson River. The animated creatures are based on animals observed in Central Park. By starting in the sky, descending the cliff and finally plunging into the river, the motion of the animation unifies variety of screens into a single, immersive environment. The animation is part of a series inspired by Course of Empire by Hudson River School painter, Thomas Cole.
